PRP FOR HAIR LOSS

What is PRP Therapy?

PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma; it is a therapy for decreasing hair loss. It is a three-step procedure, where at the first step, the blood of the patient is drawn; then blood is processed as the second step and the final step is injecting the derived PRP into the scalp. According to some medical experts, the natural hair growth gets triggered with PRP, which helps in better blood flow and supply to the hair follicles, and it consequently results in a thicker hair shaft. PRP procedure is sometimes combined with several hair loss treatments. This therapy is also commonly used for curing injured tendons, ligaments as well as muscles.

Prp Process

PRP Process

IThis procedure needs extensive care, and it is commonly used for new hair growth.

  • In the first step, the blood is drawn from the patient’s arm.
  • In the second step, the tube of blood is processed in a machine known as a centrifuge. This machine spins the tube full of blood and separates the red blood cells and plasma.
  • In the third step, platelets rich plasma is injected in the scalp directly, at the hair follicle level.

The entire process takes up to half an hour and the blood is injected at a distance of half an inch on the entire scalp.

Who is a good candidate for PRP Therapy?

  • Anyone who is experiencing hair loss can go for this therapy.
  • Anyone with an early stage of hair loss is considered as the ideal candidate.
  • Anyone who is suffering from androgenic alopecia.
  • Anyone who is experiencing receding hairline.
  • Women who are experiencing widening parting and thinning of hair.

Results of PRP Therapy

If you want the best results, then it is important to be consistent with the treatment.Initially you need to visit once a month for the injection for a minimum 4 injections. After that, it can be repeated any number of times depending on the response and results of your procedure. If you follow the process correctly, then the predictable results can be noticed in the first three months.

The very first thing that is noticeable after the therapy will be a reduction in hair fall followed by new growth of hair as well as increased length. If the therapy is taken every six months to one year, better and consistent results will be experienced such as better hair growth with minimal or no hair fall.

It is a must to know that PRP is part of the multifaceted program and it is performed in combination with other hair loss treatments or for hair thinning problems.

Side Effects of PRP

As in PRP therapy, your blood is drawn from your body and then injected in your scalp, soit is very safe with hardly any side effects. However very few may experience the following side effects:

  • Itching
  • Headache
  • Very rarely no change or increase in hair loss

Risks involved in PRP Therapy

Injections and blood extraction may sound scary but this therapy does not involve any real risk. Many patients prefer injection without anesthesia, and they do not experience much discomfort. In the case of discomfort or pain, an ice pack or a vibrating device helps to alleviate discomfort during the procedure. A numbing cream can be applied prior to the injections for a nearly pain free procedure.

Cost of PRP Therapy

For best results, one therapy each month is required for the first 3 - 4 months, and for maintenance treatment, one visit every 6-8 months is required. The average cost of PRP therapy in India is approximately 10,000 - 15,000 INR and in foreign nations, it generally ranges from $500 - $1500. Many insurance companies do not cover any cost for PRP therapy as it is a cosmetic treatment. The cost of the PRP therapy also gets influenced by the following factors:

  • The geographical location of the clinic
  • Quality of equipment and consumables used during the procedure
